I've started my adventure to build a Van's Aircraft RV14a. For several years, I've been planning to build an Experimental (homebuilt) airplane - once retired.
But first, I needed to get my Pilot's License. (Kinda key !) So... first things first: I retired March 2014 from Caterpillar - and started flying lessons in the Summer of 2014. Soloed a day after Christmas, and got my Private July 2015. Shop set up, tools acquisition, and practise kits during Fall launched me into my build starting Dec 31, 2015 !

I've chosen to build the RV14a since it's about 10% larger than Van's prior models - so it fits my 6'4" frame well. Van's is well known for great value & outstanding flying qualities. It's been a no brainer decision for me. A tour of their facilities and demo flight in Oct 2013 clinched the deal. My wife - also a pilot - exclaimed after her demo flight "retire NOW so you can build one of these". The RV14a fits my mission of a good compromise between cross country & aerobatics. Plus...I fit, too.

So far, one month into building, it's been rewarding. Very challenging, but certainly a learning experience. The builder community is terrific - as is Van's tech support. I'm finished with the Vert Stab and Rudder (Jan 2016). So... with a 5 month delivery lead time, I've ordered the Quick Build Wings and Fuselage.

Rudder Pedal Bearing Block  ( 2 hrs )

While Fuselage is on it's side, decided to jump ahead and work on items easier installed in that orientation.  Much easier to work on center support Rudder Pedal Bearing Block F-6115 per Sec 33-05 and -06.   Drilled #12 locator holes while clamped to support, then enlarged in drill press to #10 holes.   Then split apart via bandsaw.   Assembled loosely for now.   Located in furthest forward position for best leg room (1 of 3 positions).


[Note:  discovered Van's didn't provide Bearing Block Template for LH and RH Blocks, so emailed request to expedite. Seems packing list/inventory is inaccurate for QB's.   They're now 2 for 3 in missing templates needed]

Vents Assembly ( 1 hr )

Bonded Vents to Fuselage per Steps 7 & 8, Sect 29-22.   Worked well to turn Fuselage on it's side for easier access.  After initial set,  added carpenters clamp so I could rotate Fuselage back to opposite side.
Adhesive visible on top side will be hidden
 by Instrument panel and sill overhang.

Vent Assemblies ( 1 hr )

Only had time to complete Step 5 in Sect 29-22 to seal w/ adhesive silicone Vents SV-10 into Ducts.  Attached mounting face with 3 machine screws.  Otherwise, spent some time considering upcoming stages in project. Ordered Fuel Lines pre-bent and assembled via Aircraft Specialty Cabin Fuel Line Kit.   Good feedback in VAF .   Determined I'd spend as much on tube bending and flair tool as buying the precision formed ready to install version from this source (and saved time and aggravation ...Sec 31-06 to -10.

Vent Assembly  ( 2 hrs )

Masked off wherever adhesive will be used.  Decided not to paint interior of  duct, but wait until plane painted...since not sure of exterior paint scheme.   Primed alum (NOT the actual Vent eyeball !), then painted duct and alum with semi-gloss black..  Coordinating with dash panel, and "hiding" black head screws, and highlighting Aluminum Vent.   Pending if leave edge of captured Vent as Aluminum,  or paint black too.  I like the appearance of the exposed Aluminum edge, but it will be mostly hidden.

since cooler and damp weather today.

Air Vent Assembly  ( 5 hrs )

Building LH & RH Air Vent Assemblies per Sect 29-21 at Steps 1-11,  and Sect 29 -22 at Steps 1-4.  Ready to prime/paint.  Then install with adhesive.  Using upgraded (optional) SV-10 aluminum Vents replacing original black plastic Vents.  These close tightly so no cold air leakage, plus "way cool" appearance.   Lot's of trimming of molded plastic and corner of Vents.

Lower Gear Brace   ( 3 hrs )

Completed Steps 2 & 3 at Sect 29-03 for Lower Gear Brace installation (Tri Gear build) .  Tight clearances makes getting bolts inserted a time consuming chore.   Started trying to only use wrench to advance each bolt  -  but lots and lots of 1 click at a time turns in confined area convinced me to try plan B.  Used titanium bucking bar to tap bolt heads.  Since high grade steel bolts going through aluminum Spar, no problem with thread damage, etc.

Lower Gear Braces ( 2 hrs )

I'm back from visiting my brother in hospital in Seattle - he's making full recovery from a heart attack last week.  Miraculously saved by CPR during a business trip there.   Since no warning or prior history, very alarming.  Thank God he's alive and gonna be A-OK !   

Began working on Lower Gear Brace installation at Sect 29-03, Step 1 (of 3). Trial fit up OK (tight !), so disassembled and primed.  Pic below shows prior driving bolts most of the way...
